COMMERCIAL PESTICIDE APPLICATOR EXAM SIGN-UP INSTRUCTIONS (CORE
& CATEGORY)
In most cases, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator
is fully certified after passing the Core exam and at least
one Category exam. Please note that any exam you pass is only
good for 12 months unless you become fully certified.
You can sign-up for a maximum of 3 exams
on each exam date. The three include any combination of
Core and Category exams. The three include any combination of
Core and Category exams.
There are no exam fees as of August 1, 2008, UNLESS you fail
to show up for a scheduled exam. If you fail to show up
for a scheduled exam, the next time you sign-up for any exam,
there will be a $50.00 ‘no show’ sign-up fee. This $50.00 fee
is not a per exam fee; it is the same whether you sign-up for
1 exam or 3.
CORE EXAM SIGN-UP INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1 - You must attend an approved "Basic
Pesticide Training Class" before taking the Core
exam if:
(a) You have NEVER taken the "Basic Pesticide
Training Class" before, or
(b) You previously had a NJ Pesticide Applicator's
license and have NOT been licensed for two (2) consecutive years
or more.
You do not need to take the "Basic Pesticide
Training Class" if you are taking exams for recertification
(see Attention Recertification Applicants in Step 2 below).
Note: This option does not apply if you have not been licensed
for two (2) consecutive years or more. In this case, you must
take the "Basic Pesticide Training Class" again. Follow
instructions in Step 2 below.
STEP 2 - Submit the following:
1) The completed Exam
Application Form (entire form must be completed
or it will be returned). You must fill in 3 separate choices
of exam sites and dates where indicated. Refer to the Exam
Schedule for locations, site codes and dates. If none
of the three choices is available, the next available date at
the site of the first choice will be assigned.
Note: To prepare for the exam, you must purchase the
"Core Training Manual" from the County
Cooperative Extension Office in your area. Training
manuals cannot be purchased from the Pesticide Control Program.
2) A copy of the "Basic Pesticide Training Class Attendance
Certificate." (Do not submit original certificate -
save this for your records) with the exam application form and
payment. You will receive the course attendance certificate
from the course coordinator after completion of the course.
Attention Recertification Applicants: If you are taking
the exam for recertification purposes, you do not need to resubmit
the "Basic Pesticide Training Class Attendance Certificate."
Write your current NJ Pesticide Applicator License Number in
the box located at the top-right-corner of the exam application
form before submitting.
3) If you did not show up for a previously scheduled
exam, a $50.00 sign-up fee is required, regardless of the number
or types of exams you are signing-up for. If you are due the
‘no show’ sign-up fee, include a check or money order in the
amount of $50.00 payable to "Treasurer - State of NJ" .

1. Completed Exam Application Form (VPA-030).
2. A copy of the Basic Pesticide Training Class attendance
certificate (not required if taking exam for recertification).
3. If required to pay the ‘no show’ sign-up fee, include
a check or money order in the amount of $50.00 payable
to "Treasurer - State of NJ".

- A confirmation letter indicating your assigned exam date,
site, and time will be mailed to you. Bring the confirmation
letter to the exam site with you for admittance.
The online
report link allows you to check on your exam assignment
& to review your exam results. If your exam assignment has
been made, you can verify where, on what date and at what
time each exam has been scheduled. All previous exam assignments
still in the database are also displayed. Once an exam has
been held & graded, the report will indicate if an exam was
passed or failed, or if the applicant was a no-show. If the
exam was failed, the score of the exam will be displayed,
along with the score needed to pass. Click on the web link
above and select the "Pesticide Certification Exam Sign-Up
Info" report. Follow the prompts provided for the report.
The Commercial Core exam is a closed book exam. This means
the Core training manual may not be used during the exam.
Bring a #2 lead pencil for marking the answer sheet. You may
also use calculators.
Arrive at the exam site on time with picture ID (driver's
license, passport, etc.) Latecomers will not be admitted.
Exams cannot be scheduled over the phone or by fax.
Please fill-in all forms completely or they will be returned.
Assigned exam dates are final - no rescheduling.

CATEGORY EXAM SIGN-UP INSTRUCTIONS:
STEP 1 - Complete 40-hours of "On-the-Job Training"
(OJT) for each category, if it is available to you. If you
are unable to get the 40 hours of OJT, follow instructions in
Option A or Option B below. Note: Category 10 and 13 are
exempt from Category Training Requirements.
Option A - If you are applying for Categories
3A, 3B, 7A, or 7B, and cannot get the 40 hours of OJT, you must
take an approved category training course from one of the following
providers:

Submit a copy of your "Category Course Attendance
Certificate" (do not submit original certificate
- save this for your records) with the exam application form
and payment. You will receive the course attendance certificate
from the course coordinator after completion of the course.
OR
If you have at least one year of verifiable work experience
as a Pesticide Applicator or Operator in any category (including
Categories 3A, 3B, 7A or 7B), complete the affidavit affirming that you have the required
one year of work experience and submit.
Option B - If you are applying for categories
other than 3A, 3B, 7A, or 7B and cannot get the 40 hours of
OJT, complete the "Category
Training Verification Form" and explain why you
cannot obtain the OJT and submit with exam application form
and payment.
Important: If you are taking exams because
you did not get enough recertification credits during your 5-year
recertification period, you do not need to take the 40 hours
of the OJT again. Simply write your current NJ Pesticide Applicator
License Number in the box at the top-right-corner of the exam
application form and submit. However, this option does not apply
if you have not been licensed for 2 consecutive years or more.
If you were previously licensed as a NJ Pesticide Applicator
and have not been licensed for 2 consecutive years or more,
you must receive the 40 hours of OJT again or fulfill the
requirements in Options A or B above.
If you are taking Categories 10 or 13, OJT is not required.
If you are taking Category 11, OJT is required, but additional
categories required with Category 11 do not require OJT.
Note: To prepare for the exam, you must purchase the specific
"Category
Training Manual" from the County
Cooperative Extension Office in your area. Training
manuals cannot be purchased from the Pesticide Control Program.
STEP 2 - Submit the following:
1) Completed Exam
Application Form (entire form must be completed
or it will be returned). You must fill In 3 separate choices
of exam sites and dates where indicated. Refer to the Exam

each category applied for:
a) Category Training Verification Form stating you
have 40 hours of OJT, OR

for Categories 3A, 3B, 7A, or 7B), OR
c) A copy of your "Category Course Attendance Certificate"
if applying for Categories 3A, 3B, 7A, or 7B, OR
d) The affidavit stating that you have at least
one year of verifiable work experience as a Pesticide Applicator
or Operator in Categories 3A, 3B, 7A or 7B.
3) If you did not show up for a previously scheduled
exam, a $50.00 sign-up fee is required, regardless of the number
or types of exams you are signing-up for. If you are due the
‘no show’ sign-up fee, include a check or money order in the
amount of $50.00 payable to "Treasurer - State of NJ".

PRIVATE PESTICIDE APPLICATOR EXAM SIGN-UP INSTRUCTIONS
A Private Pesticide Applicator is fully certified
after passing the Private Pesticide Applicator exam.
